Certificate of Insurance Rejected or Non-Compliant? Here’s What It Takes to Fix It.

Your certificate was rejected or marked non-compliant, or you already know your insurance falls short of a job’s requirements. Send us the notice and the insurance requirements. A licensed advisor tells you whether the certificate is wrong, the policy falls short, or both.

“A general contractor had strict insurance requirements that were holding up work for us. Unique Risk stepped in and worked directly with the GC to ensure every requirement was met — so we could move forward and keep growing the business.”

Manuel A. · Roofing Contractor

Is It a Certificate Problem or an Insurance Problem?

A certificate of insurance reports coverage. It can’t create it. So a rejection comes down to one of two problems, and sometimes both:

  • The certificate is wrong. Holder name, missing endorsement copies, wording that doesn’t match the contract. Your current agent can usually correct this.
  • The policy doesn’t meet the requirements. A corrected certificate won’t help. The coverage has to change, and that is the work we do.

The first step is finding out which one you have.

Common Reasons Certificates Get Rejected

Marked Non-Compliant by myCOI or Another Compliance Platform?

Large GCs, cities and property managers rarely review certificates themselves. They use a compliance service such as myCOI, Certificial, Docutrax, Yardi VendorShield, RealPage Vendor Credentialing, Jones, NetVendor or VendorSmart.

The notice usually says “non-compliant.” Some say “deficient,” “coverage gap” or “rejected.” Each means something in your coverage or certificate doesn’t match the requirements on file.

Don’t assume you need an entirely new insurance policy. Forward the notice as you received it. It lists what failed, and that is where we start.

Unique Risk is an independent insurance agency and is not affiliated with or endorsed by these compliance platforms.

Your Current Insurance Company Can’t Meet the Requirements?

Sometimes the problem isn’t your certificate. It’s your insurance policy.

The GC, owner or public agency hiring you may require higher limits, specific endorsements, or a carrier rating your current insurance company doesn’t have. When that’s the case, another certificate won’t solve the problem.

That’s where Unique Risk can help.

We review what the project requires and lay out your options: changing your existing coverage, adding a policy, or moving to a different insurance company. Before anything is cancelled, we walk you through the cost and coverage differences.

You shouldn’t have to walk away from a job without knowing what your options are.

“We used to lose time waiting on certificates of insurance—they’d take forever and were rarely right the first time, which held up getting paid. Unique Risk fixed that. Now certificates come back correct within 30 minutes, and we never have to ask twice.”
